Tucked within the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands are a series of fishing villages off the west coast of Norway. When we visited Norway, in July 2024, we spent a couple of days here. From Bodø, we picked up another rental and set our sights on the Lofoten Islands, a dreamscape of jagged peaks and fishing villages. We explored postcard-perfect Reine, the fairytale-like village of Å, and the bustling harbor town of Svolvær.

We did not have much of an agenda here, just drove around stopping every few minutes to take in a breathtaking view.

We stayed in a cozy rorbuer — a traditional fisherman’s hut turned cozy retreat, built right on the water.

But my most enduring memory of Lofoten Islands, nay the entire Norway trip would be that wonderful sunset!

We were mid-dinner at a local restaurant when we heard gasps from those who were seated near a window. People left their plates half eaten and started slowly trickling out. Bemused we followed. Outside, the sky looked like it had caught fire — golden clouds, blushing pink horizons, and light so surreal it didn’t seem real. It was the kind of beauty that makes you forget to speak. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.
