Food Tour Of Greenwich Village, New York City

NYC Trip1We spent the last weekend visiting friends in the New Jersey area and took the opportunity to see the Greenwich Village in New York City.  We have been to New York City several times but have always spent most of our time visiting the main tourist destinations in Manhattan. This time we decided to skip that and do something different. While doing some internet research on local attractions, I came up on a site that offers food tours for Greenwich village. Intrigued by the idea of a food tour, I explored some more and found out that there were several recommended food joints in that area.  After some more Google searches and reading a couple of food blogs I came up with my own itinerary for a food tour of Greenwich village.

My friend Pooja lives in New Jersey so, we took the train from her place to 9th Street Metro and walked down a few blocks to Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. At the entrance of the park is a large Arch modeled after the Arch de Triomphe in Paris. The park is dominated by a large fountain in the center but surrounding it are strolling areas, gardens, play-area for kids, benches and an open air chess tables.  It was fairly crowded with locals and tourists relaxing, reading, eating, playing and enjoying the open air band. Annika was enthralled by the drummer and spent quite a bit of time dancing to the beats.  After spending about half an hour there, we crossed the garden and entered Macdougal Street where our food tour started in earnest. Postcards from Indy!

I had the opportunity to visit Indianapolis for a conference (American Association for Physicists in Medicine) earlier this month. Annika was suffering from croup – a variant of bronchitis that affects the larynx and the trachea. She had fever, sore throat and a weird kind of painful cough making her cranky, miserable and irritable.  Seejo was smart enough to have an official trip scheduled  right around the same time.  So I was left to take care of a sick and clingy child all alone, leaving me angry, miserable and irritable.By the time Seejo returned after three days, I was ready for a break.

Although Indy hardly ranks as a top tourist destination, I was really looking forward to the trip to Indianapolis — to unwind, relax and sleep!  I reached Indianapolis on Monday morning and took the cab directly to the conference venue. I had never attended an AAPM meeting, so I was looking forward to learning the hot topics that physicists are buzzing about, their current gripes, and who they like to take potshots at. I find that one of the most interesting aspects of any society meeting is  the clear demarcation of “us” and “them” in that field. Since I work in a very cross disciplinary landscape , these distinctions always fascinate me, mainly because in most cases I group them together.  For example,  I learnt that the biotechnology industry clearly believes that they are different from (and really competing with ) the Pharma folks, the breast radiologists separate themselves from the breast surgeons although they attack the same disease, the data managers love to take potshots at the clinical researchers and QA, the nuclear medicine radiologists are quick to point out the difference between them and other radiologists and so on. And in this case the clinical physicists clearly look down on their brethren who do low energy solid state work. Continued…

Happy New Year! & Year End Summary (2012)

Following the tradition ( 2006, 2007 , 2008, 2009 , 2010 & 2011), here are my 2012  highlights.

NYCard2013Achievements this year: It is a challenge to separate my achievements from Annika’s especially as my major achievement is navigating the complexities of parenthood.  After relying on parental support for the last 18+ months, we are finally on our own. Another major accomplishment for me was successfully learning the process of switching off work once I reach home. This was a  more arduous task than I thought it would be.  It took some effort to resist “responding to just  one last email”  That being said, I am enjoying my work – it is wonderful to be exposed to groundbreaking cancer research at early stages.  To borrow  colleagues’ words : Our exposure to companies performing cutting edge technology makes health reports in the popular media seem like history text books.

Travels this year: The big change this year was learning to travel with a baby.  We made a short trip to Austin to meet our new nephew, Aiden, and then it was off to India for the month of August. In India we took a mini-vacation to Munnar and Bombay. In October , along with my mother, we visited California to drive up the Pacific coast. I also managed two official trips – to Miami and the Bay Area for conferences.

“Could do better” of the Year: This is the same as last year. I don’t make New Year Resolutions but if I did— keeping the blog active would be top of the list.

Realization of the year: I could go on and on here (enough to compile a list of “What they don’t tell you about raising a baby” ) but here are a few….

  • However busy I am, I still have time to read !
  • You fall sick when your baby falls sick
  • Motherhood makes you  lose the inhibition of singing in public even with being tone deaf

Summary this year: We are healthy, happy and enjoying life. Bring on 2013!!

Wish you all a very happy and healthy new year-2013

California Coast

Annika-California-2012-Brdr-94

Late October my mother, Seejo, Annika and I flew to Los Angeles, CA to drive up the California coast to San Francisco. This was my mother’s first trip to California and our first real vacation trip with Annika.   With breath taking views of the Pacific coast on one side and majestic cliffs on the other side,  California’s Route 1 traverses through some charming little towns , small farms,  beautiful state parks and   provides us with picture post-card views everywhere you look.

Starting from Santa Barbara near LA, you pass Morro bay (with the eponymous Morro Rock), San Simeone with its famous Hearst Castle, the dramatic coastline of Big Sur area along with its numerous parks,  posh Carmel by the Sea with its restaurants, shopping and galleries, the wonderful aquarium at Monterey and several other stopping points on the way

We had not planned to spend a lot of time in Los Angeles preferring to start on our road trip as soon as possible. However we couldn’t leave LA without showing my mother Grauman’s Chinese theater in Hollywood and taking some perfectly cheesy touristy photos in front of the Hollywood sign.  My mother mentioned that she had never seen a wax museum before , so we remedied that immediately by stopping at the one near the Hollywood walk of fame. Happy New Year, 2012

Following the tradition ( 2006, 2007 , 2008, 2009 & 2010), here are the 2011  highlights for me.

The Highlight of the Year : Welcome to Annika Diya Sebastine on November 7 2011.

Achievements this year: Pregnancy, Bed-rest, Tele-working, Labor , Delivery, Newborn Care !

Travels this year: Given that I was on “bed-rest” for about half the year thanks to pregnancy complications, our travel was extremely limited. Other than the beginning of the year trip to Belgium, we did not venture out of the tri-state area (Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC). By the end of my pregnancy, I had severe cabin-fever and was desperate for a vacation.

“Could do better” of the Year: I have pretty much neglected writing on my blog, writing emails or even writing notes! Hopefully I’ll do better next year.

Summary this year:  Everything that happened this year can be summarized in one single word: Annika. Looking forward to more adventures in 2012.

Wish you all a very happy and exciting new year-2012

If it is the weekend, it must be Belgium

PHOTOS : BELGIUM, MONSCHAU

DSC_6914Earlier this year, Seejo and I essayed the roles of a jet setting couple who meet in Europe for a brief rendezvous and then part to go to the opposite corners of the globe.  Seejo was on a study tour to Israel and China as part of his coursework for his MBA. Between the schedules for the two trips he had four days to kill in Belgium (he was flying Belgian Air & Brussels was his transit city). I decided to fly out to meet him and we enjoyed exploring Belgium for an extra long weekend. Continued…

Year End Summary: 2010

Following the tradition ( 2006, 2007 , 2008, & 2009), here are the 2010  highlights for me.

Achievements this year: The results of the multicenter clinical trial that I worked on while at Naviscan are finally getting published.  I have about seven publications that are as a result of my work with PEM : two are published, three more are in press, one is submitted and three are at various stages of being written.  On the personal front, I have also tried to keep my blog active, exercise a little more regularly, cook a little bit more at home and all in all try to maintain a daily routine—something that was missing during my frenetic days at a start-up!

Travels this year: The travel highlight this year was our much awaited and much planned family trip to Botswana and South Africa with a day trip to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.  It was an incredible experience to interact with the wildlife in their natural settings and all I can say is I am glad that I could be part of this.  On the domestic front, Seejo and I (along with our friends Pulkit and Sejal) visited Yosemite National Park in California for a long weekend in October – this was one of the most popular US National Park that we hadn’t yet been to.  The scenery was magnificent and the company was wonderful and we had a very refreshing mini-vacation.

Since we couldn’t take longer breaks because of the lousy leave policy at NCI as well as Seejo’s MBA, we got a chance to visit some of the local spots that we had never been to such as Deep Creek Lake, Virginia Beach and Colonial Williamsburg. The lack of vacation travel was offset by my work trips , especially during the latter half of the year: I went to North Carolina, Minnesota, Boston, twice each to California and Chicago.

Best Buy of the Year: My Nook! I am a Nook-addict now. I can read anywhere and at any time and I never move out of the house (Seejo might say—out of any room) without taking my Nook!  I also finished cataloging all my books this year using Library Thing.

Focus of the year: Seejo’s MBA was the driving factor & our main focus for most of this year.  In an attempt to accelerate his MBA, Seejo had taken several extra classes as well as enrolled in many extra-curricular programs offered at U.Maryland.  While he pulled several all-nighters and juggled classes, assignments, office-work and his other commitments, I am glad to report that it is almost over and I am looking forward to the next challenge in our lives.

Summary this year:  Some ecstatic moments and some moments of agony but overall a relaxed and peaceful year ; I need to kick things up a notch next year!

Wish you all a very happy and exciting new year-2011

Reproducing Ansel Adams

Yosemite National Park2

PHOTOS: YOSEMITE

Seejo and I (along with our friends Pulkit and Sejal) spent a long weekend at Yosemite National Park this November.  On the very first day, we stopped at Tunnel point and spent some time taking in the magnificent vista before us. This vista has become synonymous for Yosemite due to the famous photograph taken by Ansel Adams in the 1930s– Clearing Winter Storm.  This is not only one of the most famous photographs of Yosmite it is probably one of the most famous ones in Adams portfolio of wonderful photographs. I had seen the reproduction of that photo and was eager to see the real view.  And it was a magnificent view — with the majestic El Capitan and the aptly named Half Dome peaks with the green Yosemite valley in between and a tiny thread of the Bridal Veil Falls on one side.

Around the World in Seven Days!

This week I prepared seven different dinners– each one from a different country. I made everything from scratch and this is how it all turned out.

Volt

Volt 081Last Saturday, we had dinner at Volt.  Although I am devoted follower of many Food based TV programs, I have never followed Top Chef and therefore had no clue about Chef Bryan Voltaggio’s culinary style or techniques.  All I knew was that he used local organic seasonal ingredients and that he was brilliant.  His restaurant, Volt had been voted Maryland’s best restaurant and it was on my list of top places to try. There are three different kinds of dining options at Volt.  You can either dine from the a La Carte Menu or from the prix fixe six course tasting menu. The third option is  called “Table 21” and is a 21-course meal that you have with the chef preparing it right in front of you.  It is a testimony to the popularity of the restaurant that it’s Table 21 option is  booked pretty much well into the end of 2011.  We were incredibly  lucky to get a reservation for the a la Carte option at  5:30pm on  Saturday.
